May 10, 1962 marked the release of the first issue of the Hulk, cover art done by Jack Kirby and edited by Stan Lee himself. In this issue, Bruce Banner is caught in the middle of a Gamma maelstrom after pushing a teenager to safety thus creating the Hulk. Lee chose gray for the Hulk because he wanted a color that did not suggest any particular ethnic group. However, Stan Goldberg had problems with the gray coloring resulting in different shades of it, and green, in the issue.
